Trains, Bikes, Balloons and Boats
You'll see (and do) it all in Galena...and more!
Back in the early 1800s, Galena, then population 14,000, was a bustling mecca on its way to becoming "a Chicago" long before Chicago ever was. What sparked Galena's growth? It was a promising hub: a point of travel where all modes of transportation intersected. And anyone who was someone came here.
Today, Galena, population 3,400, is far from a sleepy little town with all that it offers.
Your journey will be a tranquil transition. Once here, current modes of transportation offer your adventuresome spirit
- Bikes
Bring your own or rent one; Galena has routes to ride. Take a leisurely trip along the Galena River Trail, which can also take you along the riverfront and out to Recreation Park. Or brave the challenge of the scenic but hilly local terrain. You can even compete in local events. - Scooters
In case pedaling isn't your style, you can grab a rental and still zip around in "bike-like" form. Interested in a "pie run" to Sinsinawa Mound or a scenic ride (with a return pick up) to Galena Cellars' Vineyard? The routes are charted and scooters waiting at Fever River Outfitters on Main Street. - Balloons
Up, up and away! Experience an eagle's view and be mystified with the wandering rivers and rolling hills that comprise our panaormic corner of Northwestern Illinois. Galena on the Fly takes you to places few have ventured. Or enjoy the ground view. Hot air balloons are frequent in the Galena sky, parades and special events. - Boats
Not quite the steamboats that once docked in Galena, but you can still adventure on the Fever River that feeds out to the great Mississippi. Kayak and canoe rental is available. Or, bring your own and dock at one of our local landings. - Trains
Hopes are high to welcome the passenger rail service in the not-so-distant future, running daily from Chicago to Dubuque.
For now, enjoy the gentle and rhythmic clickity-clack as freight trains wind slowly under the Highway 20 Bridge, past the historic depot and alongside Grant Park, to create a picture-postcard-perfect image. Area museums and exhibits also tell about the railroad's great impact on our communities.
And let's not forget a few other means of transportation.
- Horses
Ride one or ride behind one. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage tour around the city followed by a romantic dinner for two. - Trolley
Explore Galena while you relax in a climate-controlled trolley, driven by an engaging tour guide. A great way to get off your feet and learn about local history and architecture!
Continue your journey. More ideas are waiting at VisitGalena.org. Let us be your guide.
